The castle is also known as “Château des Dames” (castle of ladies), because of its six famous women owners: Katherine Briçonnet, Diane de Poitiers, Catherine de Médicis, Louise de Lorraine-Vaudémont, Louise Dupin and Marguerite Pelouze.
It is one of the most well-known châteaux of the Loire valley.
